Why Build on WordPress and Why It Matters for You

A note before diving in: this piece reflects my own preferences and experience as a designer and tutor,  not a definitive judgement on other platforms. Wix and Squarespace are solid products that work well for plenty of people and use cases. This is simply why WordPress is the platform I choose to build on, and why it’s worth considering for your business.

When you’re choosing a platform for your website, it’s easy to be drawn in by the slick onboarding and “build it yourself in an afternoon” promise of platforms like Wix or Squarespace. They’re everywhere, they’re heavily marketed, and honestly, for a hobby site or a quick portfolio, they can be a fine choice.

But if you’re building a website for your business, something that represents your brand, drives your customers, and needs to grow alongside you, the platform you choose matters more than you might think. And that’s exactly why I continue to build on WordPress.

Here’s why.

You Own Your Content, Not a Platform

This is the big one, and it’s the reason I always come back to WordPress: with WordPress, your website and everything in it, your pages, your images, your blog posts, your customer data, belongs to you. Not to a platform. Not to a subscription. To you.

With Wix or Squarespace, your content lives inside their walled garden. Everything you build is tied to their proprietary system, which means if you ever want to leave, you can’t simply pack up your files and go. You’re often stuck starting from scratch, rebuilding your site page by page, on a completely different platform.

WordPress doesn’t work that way. It’s open-source, which means your website files are genuinely yours. If you want to switch web hosts, change developers, or move your site somewhere else entirely, you can. You’re never locked into one company’s ecosystem just because that’s where you happened to start.

You’re Not Held Hostage by Pricing Plans

Ever notice how those “build your website in minutes” platforms start out affordable, and then somehow the price creeps up every year? Once your business, and your website, is built on their platform, you don’t have a lot of room to negotiate. Want to remove their branding? Upgrade plan. Need more storage or bandwidth? Upgrade plan. It’s their playground, and you play by their pricing rules.

With WordPress, you choose your own hosting provider, and you can change it whenever you like. That means you’re free to shop around for the best price, the best performance, and the best support, rather than being locked into whatever a single company decides to charge this year.

Freedom to Grow, Without Rebuilding From Scratch

Businesses change. What starts as a simple five-page website might need to grow into something with online bookings, an online store, a members’ area, or a blog with hundreds of posts. WordPress is built to grow with you. Its huge library of themes and plugins means we can add new functionality without tearing your whole site apart and starting again.

Wix and Squarespace, by contrast, are designed to keep you within their system’s limits. They work beautifully for what they’re built for, but the moment your business outgrows their templates, you’ll often find yourself boxed in.

At the end of the day, this comes down to control. Your website is one of your most valuable business assets, it’s often the first place a potential customer meets you. Shouldn’t you be the one who decides where it lives, how it’s hosted, and what happens to it down the track?

Because your website should work for you. Not the other way around.
